How athletes plan their summer vacation

During the summer, Fall Sports require their athletes to participate in workouts and practices over the summer. Many committed athletes are dedicated to their sports, but they also want to have time during the summer to vacation with their family and friends.

The Volleyball team has been very successful under Coach Taylor Noland, when the state championship in back to back seasons. Though the season official starts in August, the team works together all summer long. Each player is required to attend 15-20 team workouts. In July they take a team trip to the beach to help the players bond together. Although these players are committed, they have to find time to go on vacations and hang out with friends.

“Before summer starts, I sit down with my family and plan out my summer schedule. Fortunately, my coaches provide us the summer tournament schedule weeks before school ends. I try my best to fit both trips and workouts into my summer plan”. – Kate Chesser

Kate is a dedicated Volleyball player and she has to cancel vacations regularly because of her commitment to her school and beach volleyball teams. Although Kate and the rest of the Volleyball team do not have time for much of a social life, they are all doing something they love.

Now lets talk football. The football team has a very serious summer program conducted by Head Strength and Conditioning coach Peter Tongren. The football workouts are from Monday to Thursday throughout the entire summer. These workouts are very important for players to attend so they are ready to play in the fall. Missing a large amount of workouts for personal vacations will cause players to fall behind and not be ready when the season starts.

“As a freshmen the coaches are not as strict about how many workouts you miss but as a sophomore they are. For this upcoming season I am going to plan a lot of my trips during the July 4th holiday week because we don’t have any workouts during that week. Also I try to go to my lake house on the weekends because we don’t have workouts during that time”. – Ian Jones

Although Ian is a very committed football player he likes to spend time with his friends. Ian shared with us “the workouts don’t really affect your day because of how early they start. So once you are finished it is only 9:30 and by that time your friends are still sleeping”. The football program is a huge commitment but the players know it is all worth it in the long run.
